Gift Kunyanda, known professionally as ‘‘Kuncho Mindset,’’ is a Zambian rapper, songwriter, and producer born on July 7, 1999, in Lusaka. His unique musical style and insightful lyrics have quickly made him one of the most promising voices in Zambian hip-hop.Kuncho’s artistic name combines two essential aspects of his identity: “Kuncho,” which represents creativity and generosity, and “Mindset,” reflecting his transformative journey and mental resilience.

Early Life and Academic Background

Before embarking on his music career, Kuncho showed a remarkable aptitude for academics. He attended Sesheke High School, where he excelled in his studies while actively participating in extracurricular activities. His hard work in academics earned him a scholarship to study Chinese language in China, following his strong performance in the Grade 12 exams.His proficiency in History, Chemistry, and Literature were key factors in securing the scholarship. Despite his academic success, Kuncho’s passion for music began to take shape in the backdrop of his educational journey. His diverse interests helped him develop a unique perspective, which would later influence his artistic style.

The Loss of His Mother and Musical Inspiration

Kuncho’s life took a dramatic turn with the tragic loss of his mother, a deeply personal event that would shape his future music. The pain of this loss inspired Kuncho to express his emotions through music, leading him to release his first official song, “First Wave,” in 2018. This track marked his transition from a student with a passion for music to an artist finding his voice. The grief and longing associated with his mother’s death became a focal point in his music, giving rise to themes of resilience, reflection, and personal healing.
In February 2019, Kuncho released his debut album, “Mama Kuncho”, a deeply emotional tribute to his mother. The album explored themes of love, loss, and remembrance, with Kuncho’s heartfelt lyrics resonating with many listeners who had experienced similar emotions. The album’s release solidified Kuncho’s position in the Zambian music industry, allowing him to connect with a broader audience and showcase his musical talent.

Establishing Himself as an Artist and Producer

As Kuncho’s musical journey progressed, he evolved from just a rapper to a multidimensional artist. He began producing his own beats and gained a reputation not just for his lyricism but also for his production skills. In 2021, Kuncho released his debut EP, “MAN ON THE RUN,” which further showcased his range as an artist.
